1. Register is what linguists name a style suitable to the occasion. Avoid colloquial abbreviations: not shouldn’t, should not. Jokes are dangerous: when they do not work, they may cost you much. Avoid them, overall: or at least don’t be humorous. Do not for God sake copy the way I’m presenting here, either the frivolous colloquial style or the rather the numbered subheadings, or overbearing tone. It is a paper on how to compose a literary paper, not a literary essay itself.
2. It is important for writers to know that quote adequately but not too plentifully - about a third of a page at the outside and no more, and typically several lines at one go. It is your idea, not the citation that is the point. Also, you should never forget that your thoughts should be tied definitely into the context, and that you need to show this by citation. It is significant for writers always to provide page numbers for the quotations: you will have to know where to locate them again.
3. You must not use short paragraphs.
4. The department provides clear rules about length of non-assessed and assessed essays. A first-year non-assessed paper must be about 1500-2000 words long.
5. It I necessary for you always have a copy of your essay that you hand in, as academics are typically very unreliable, commonly lose essays.
All these and many others must be kept in mind for you to compose your writtem assignment greatly.
